Constructivist Sculptural Puzzle

Project
The project “Constructivist Sculptural Puzzle” is a digitally modelled and 3D-printed puzzle that reinterprets Avgust Černigoj’s constructivist portrait of Srečko Kosovel. It transforms a two-dimensional artwork into a physical, three-dimensional object, offering a new approach to image assembly.
The puzzle is divided into a grid of square pieces, departing from the usual logic of conventional jigsaw puzzles with unique cut-out shapes and complex interlocking forms. Here, the assembly process is guided by height transitions across the relief surface. These spatial differences help the user recognise possible connections, while the raised portrait and recessed outer edge provide additional orientation within a detachable rectangular frame. The frame allows the object to be compactly disassembled and stored in a small pouch.
The final object was developed through an exploratory digital and physical process that allows different motifs to be adapted using the same underlying method. The 3D-printing settings were optimised after the completion of the digital model in order to achieve the highest possible surface quality. The square-grid format ensures the repeatability of the digital process and gives the puzzle the function of a prototype for future mould-making and production in other materials. The project connects contemporary digital tools with the constructivist logic of the product: simple components, a clear function and the potential for affordable production.

Author
Marko Morales Kalamar is a graphic and interactive communication designer based in Ljubljana. In response to the development of generative artificial intelligence and its influence on the perception and value of graphic design, his work has increasingly shifted towards the creation of tangible, physical objects.
His practice is driven by an interest in connecting contemporary digital tools with material production. He develops functional objects whose authorship, construction and materiality can be experienced through touch and direct interaction.
His recent work focuses particularly on combining 3D modelling with 3D printing to explore modular systems, prototyping processes and forms that would be difficult or impractical to produce using conventional manufacturing methods. Alongside his design practice, he has gained international experience and presented his work in both solo and group exhibitions.
