Ljubljana II: From Archive to Immersion

Project

The project “Ljubljana II: From Archive to Immersion” is an interactive digital heritage project that transforms fragmented archival material into an immersive virtual experience. Through 3D modelling, animation and spatial storytelling, it reconstructs the interior of the former Slovenian ship Ljubljana II, enabling contemporary audiences to explore a historical environment that no longer exists.

The project consists of two complementary digital experiences: a cinematic animation that guides viewers through the reconstructed interior, conveying the atmosphere and spatial character of the lost environment, and a 360-degree video that allows the space to be explored from multiple directions through a predefined narrative. Together, these formats combine cinematic storytelling with immersive viewing.
At the centre of the reconstruction are works by the Slovenian sculptor Stojan Batič, including a relief composed of five artworks and the sculpture “Anchor and Dolphin” (1964), both digitally recreated from archival references. By connecting digital communication, virtual environments and cultural storytelling, the project demonstrates how contemporary digital media can make inaccessible cultural heritage more understandable, engaging and relevant to new audiences.

Author

Marko Stražar is a master’s student in Graphic and Interactive Communications at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, University of Ljubljana. His work focuses on 3D visualisation, digital environments, animation and interactive media, with a particular interest in applying digital technologies to the interpretation and presentation of cultural heritage.

Combining technical knowledge with visual storytelling, he explores how 3D modelling, virtual environments and immersive media can create new ways of experiencing historical, artistic and architectural content. His projects include architectural visualisations, virtual tours, experimental digital reconstructions and interactive presentations.
Through his work, he connects archival research with contemporary digital communication, transforming historical material into visual experiences for contemporary audiences.
