The “_place” project refers to the absence of place: a space that cannot be recorded on geographical maps, but only through personal experience. It explores how positive and negative emotions shape the perception of a place. The project was inspired by Christian Nold’s “Emotional Cartography”, which examines the political, social and cultural implications of visualising emotional experiences.

The visualisations of the parameters NOSTALGIA, EXCITEMENT, SAFETY, LOVE and HAPPINESS derive from the designer’s theoretical research and personal interpretation. Technology is used as a medium for translating emotions into a visual language.

The tool’s visual identity draws on the pixelated aesthetic of the graphics it generates, combining vivid colours with ironic slogans such as no sunsets pls, no more fridge magnets, big ben who, emotionally abroad and not tripadvisor-approved. These phrases question the clichés of mass tourism and emphasise that a place is defined not by recognisable landmarks, but by personal perception.

The project also extends into physical space through a limited series of 50 × 50 cm scarves featuring visualisations of places with personal significance to the designer. Together with postcards and stickers, they form an expanded visual system that allows the project to exist beyond the screen.
