Workshop

The workshop “From Illustration to Graphic Design” introduces participants to the fundamentals of graphic design through the practical process of creating a poster. Each participant begins with a favourite work of art and reinterprets it using handmade techniques such as illustration and collage, without relying on digital effects or complex tools.

The workshop begins with selecting a theme and an associative drawing exercise, followed by choosing colours, textures, symbols and other visual elements that best communicate the atmosphere and character of the selected artwork. In the final stage, participants experiment with composition, arranging these elements into a complete poster design.

The aim of the workshop is to introduce the basic principles of graphic design through an accessible and intuitive process, demonstrating how illustration, symbolism, colour and composition can be used to condense and clearly communicate a visual message within a two-dimensional format.

From Illustration to Graphic Design

This free two-hour workshop is intended primarily for pupils in the upper grades of primary school and is led by Rina Barbarić. No previous knowledge of graphic design is required.

Each participant will select a favourite work of art and reinterpret it through an original poster. The process begins with associative drawing to identify key motifs, feelings and ideas, followed by the selection of colours, textures, symbols and forms. Posters are created using analogue techniques, primarily illustration and collage, without digital effects or complex tools. Participants will experiment with scale, contrast and composition, and each will complete their own poster by the end of the workshop.

The aim is to introduce the fundamental principles of graphic design through an accessible practical task and to show how a strong idea, careful observation and a few simple visual elements can communicate a clear message.
