Visual Identity for Croatia’s First Queer Opera

Project
The project “Visual Identity for Croatia’s First Queer Opera” was created for the event “A Queer Zagreb Night at the Opera”, held on 13 July at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. The programme offered a pioneering perspective on opera within the local cultural context, bringing together numerous artists and connecting some of the best-known operatic arias with a queer sensibility, thereby opening space for a new way of reading and experiencing opera.
The visual identity is built on an approach that challenges, provokes and demands the viewer’s active presence. The operas The Barber of Seville and The Magic Flute served as key stylistic reference points, with their symbols reinterpreted through a contemporary queer language. Figaro’s razor becomes a razor blade, while Tamino’s flute becomes a vibrator, transforming familiar operatic motifs into subversive signs of individuality, freedom, power and control.
An accent pink creates a bold setting for emphatic typography, periodically interrupted by an explicit object. This interplay of typography, colour and object gives the operatic references both a literal and provocative meaning, reflecting the nonconformist and expressive character of the event. The visual identity demonstrates that opera should not be viewed only through conventional codes, but read from a new, queer perspective.
