Locations
At the heart of Sesvete lies the former Sljeme factory complex, once one of the most important economic drivers of eastern Zagreb. Generations of workers shaped a place that for decades stood as a symbol of production, employment and the development of the local community. After years of disuse, the complex is now being given a new opportunity to become a space for encounters, culture, education and creative activity.
The theme “Friction” resonates particularly strongly in this setting. Friction is not only conflict or resistance, but also a driving force for change: an encounter between past and future, industry and culture, memory and new ideas. At the former Sljeme factory, this tension is transformed into creative potential, while former production spaces become places of dialogue, experimentation and collective creation.
The Sljeme za sve initiative brings people together through exhibitions, workshops, talks and other programmes, demonstrating that industrial heritage can play an important role in the contemporary city. In place of a closed and forgotten complex, an open space is emerging that connects the local community with new cultural content and encourages reflection on sustainable reuse. The former Sljeme factory thus becomes an example of how friction between heritage and the contemporary can generate new value for the site, the community and the city.
Program
As part of Zagreb Design Week 2026, visual artist and printmaker Kristijan Horvat will present an exhibition of his work and an open screen-printing workshop at the former Sljeme factory, Senjska 1, Sesvete.
The event is organised at the invitation of the citizens’ initiative Sljeme za sve, which is revitalising the former industrial complex through cultural and community programmes, opening it to the public as a space for creativity, encounters and collective activity while exploring its future public use.
Horvat will present a selection of recent works combining drawing, illustration and printmaking techniques such as screen printing, exploring the relationships between everyday life, space, personal experience and collective memory. Alongside the exhibition, he will lead an open screen-printing workshop where visitors can print motifs from his work onto their own T-shirts and become acquainted with the fundamentals of the technique.
Kristijan Horvat graduated from the Faculty of Graphic Arts, University of Zagreb, specialising in Graphic Product Design. He is the founder of Kikiriki Studio, through which he develops independent graphic projects, screen-printing work and collaborations in the field of restoration, while also working as a tattoo artist. His practice brings together contemporary art, graphic production and hands-on forms of collaborative creative work.
