Kala

Project

The project “Kala – Visual Identity” encompasses the design for Kala, a specialty coffee bar located in the historic centre of Omiš. The brand name derives from the Dalmatian kala – a narrow stone street – from which the bar takes its name. The visual identity was developed at the intersection of local context and contemporary specialty coffee culture.

The central element of the identity is a wordmark whose typography combines two contrasting visual languages. The fluid curves of the letters evoke the creamy texture of coffee, conveying warmth, hospitality, and playfulness. In contrast, the straight, reduced lines communicate precision, restraint, and dedication to quality – values that define specialty coffee culture. The vertical strokes of the letters k and l establish a rhythm reminiscent of narrow Mediterranean streets, creating a subtle connection between the name and the space. The wordmark was developed from an existing typeface and adapted to the needs of the visual identity.

The identity is based on a minimalist expression, a natural colour palette, and carefully considered typography in order to emphasise the spatial experience, a slower pace of staying, and a focus on product quality. The system was applied across signage, packaging, printed materials, and digital communications, creating a recognisable and consistent identity that connects the local character of Omiš with the contemporary aesthetics of the specialty coffee scene.

Author

Maja Jandrić is a multidisciplinary designer working at the intersection of industrial and graphic design. Her practice encompasses product, furniture and retail space design, as well as the development of visual identities and other visual communication systems. Regardless of the medium, she begins by researching context, function and material, seeking to create considered, functional and visually clear solutions.

Alongside her professional practice, she explores digital and manual production through 3D printing and ceramics. She develops original collections of functional objects made from slip-cast clay, examining processes that connect design, making and everyday use, as well as the boundaries between industrial production, craft and visual communication.
