Mediterranean Herbarium

Project
The “Mediterranean Herbarium” project explores how plants can become an integral part of the materials used to create functional objects. Inspired by the Mediterranean landscape, it is based on the idea that plants are not merely decorative, but active elements that shape the product itself.
The collection consists of vases made from a glass bottle, which after use is given a new function as a water container, and an outer form in which plants become an integral part of the material. Together, these elements create a whole in which the outer form defines the appearance and character of the vase.
The three versions demonstrate different possibilities for incorporating plants into the material: a natural material with embedded lavender, and an author-developed handmade paper containing rosemary and immortelle. These plants, characteristic of the Mediterranean landscape, give each version its own texture, colour and distinctive scent, creating a unique visual, tactile and olfactory experience. Here, plants are not only a source of inspiration, but also an integral part of the material and the identity of the object. By choosing the bottle and the flowers, the user further personalises each vase.
The project is part of the VIUVIU design philosophy “Nature in a New Form”, based on the idea that existing objects and natural materials can be given new functions, new value and new meaning.

VIUVIU is a Croatian design brand that develops interior products with an emphasis on circular design and longevity. The development of each product begins with an exploration of the properties and possibilities of its materials, whose distinctive characteristics become the starting point for new functions, forms and meanings. The aim is to create objects designed to be used, preserved and passed on over time.
Nature, the Mediterranean landscape and everyday life are the main sources of inspiration for the brand’s lighting, interior objects and material research.
For selected products, personalisation forms an integral part of the design concept. Their final appearance is shaped by the properties of the materials and the way users adapt them, making each object unique.
In 2024, the brand was a Zagreb Design Week finalist in the product design category.
