terrapija 4.0: Heatwaves

terrapija 4.0: Heatwaves

Project

The climate crisis causes unease, especially among young people, which often results in resignation, denial, or a feeling of helplessness. Four years ago, this situation prompted the launch of “Terrapija”, a collaborative educational platform for students, created in collaboration with the Department of Media Design at University North.

“Terrapija” provides young people with an opportunity to express their own vision of the problem, offering a space for critical thinking, creative expression, and collaboration with students from other faculties. The aim of “Terrapija” is, through education, visual campaigns, PR, and public exhibitions, to contribute to building a climate narrative that will give young people a voice and encourage citizens to strengthen resilience and take climate action.

Over the four years of “Terrapija”, design students created posters based on concepts from the Climate Dictionary, worked on an imaginary campaign titled “Glasaj za Zemlju!”, and created posters for an anti consumerism campaign titled “Uspori!”. In “Terrapija 4.0”, the thematic focus is on the invisible consequences of heatwaves.

Heatwaves are no longer merely a weather phenomenon or an inconvenience; they are becoming a systemic risk affecting health, work, productivity, household budgets, and ecosystems, deepening inequalities and representing a test of societal resilience. The task for students of the Department of Media Design, under the title “Heatwaves”, was to choose one aspect of the impact of heatwaves and design a poster that shifts perception: from “just another hot summer day” towards a systemic climate risk, meaning from discomfort to a threat.

The collaborative platform “terrapija” was launched four years ago by the Terra Hub association in collaboration with the Department of Media Design at University North and the 404 agency, with support from partners, the European Climate Foundation, and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Zagreb. The posters were created by students from the Department of Media Design participating in an internal competition for the best poster on a given “terrapija” topic, which this year focuses on heatwaves.

An expert jury selected the best works for the exhibition, and the winner of this year's “terrapija” is Leo Gojnik, with a series of three posters depicting monuments of significant figures in Croatian history across Zagreb, Split, and Osijek. The “terrapija 4.0” exhibition features a total of 14 works by ten authors, two of which are series of three posters: Ana Guberac and Anja Kukolj, Antonija Krivak, Goran Rudnički, Irma Matan, Klara Sorić, Leo Gojnik, Leo Repić, Lucija Osrečki, Petra Gašparić, and Tea Pokas.

The expert jury consisted of: Prof. Dr. Ivana Herceg Bulić (Department of Geophysics, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb), Sven Sorić (freelance graphic designer), Ivana Đinoti (Friedrich Ebert Foundation Zagreb), Dario Dević (Head of Design at 404 agency), and Sandra Vlašić (Executive Director of Terra Hub).
