The Thirteenth Month: Portraits of Sea Nomads

Project
The book “The Thirteenth Month: Portraits of Sea Nomads” is a literary-anthropological travelogue based on the author’s long-term field research. Through ethnographic stories about contemporary sea nomads and travel writing from the shores of the Eastern Mediterranean, it brings together accessible humanities, literary portraiture and anthropological themes.
Alongside diverse life stories, the book presents harbours, coves and the sea as temporary homes for people in constant movement, exploring the relationship between community, space and time. Its central theme is a retreat into the “thirteenth month” – an imagined space of silence, rest and reflection on the transience of life.
The layout was developed to support an uninterrupted reading experience. Text remains the primary element, while photographs appear only at the beginning of each chapter. Rather than directly illustrating the content, they establish atmosphere and tone, creating a subtle rhythm that marks transitions between chapters.
The book was originally published in Slovenian, while the Croatian edition introduces an entirely new concept, layout and photographic orientation.
